From Singapore the next stop was Indonesia. Before arriving in Bali, the initial impression I had was of extreme tourism - there were indeed lots of people but I feel my friends and I did well to stay and explore in places less heavily surrounded by tourists. Incredible waterfalls, rice fields and temples.
We were lucky enough to be there during Nyepi - the Balinese holiday for new years. This includes the Day of Silence, and the Ogoh-Ogoh parade. The parade includes hand-crafted monsters representing evil spirits, with large groups of people chanting while carrying and spinning them through the crowd.
An impactful part of Indonesia for me was the Komodo Tour - staying on a boat for a few nights and hopping around islands. Pink beaches, hikes for sunrise views, snorkelling with turtles, manta rays and baby sharks! And the obvious Komodo Island and being up close to Komodo dragons. The sights were phenomenal from the clearest water to glowing night skies with constellations so prominent. A truly memorable moment was being able to see bat migration between islands as we watched from the top deck of the boat at sunset.
Smaller visits to islands like Nusa Penida and Gili Trawangan were final stops for Indonesia, with Gili T being so small cycling across the entire island was only 15 minutes!
