Hiking, Levada walking and stunning dramatic landscapes. On every PR route we managed to come across waterfalls, misty views and bright greenery. An absolute favourite was Pico do Arieiro, where the Stairway to Heaven hike is partway on this route, sat above the clouds.
Exploring Funchal, the cathedral, then taking the cable car up to Monte Palace Madeira. The botanical gardens were filled with sculptures, animals and water features, curated to the last detail and a joy to tour round.
Spending long days out hiking meant I didn't have as much time to sketch as I'd hoped, so most of my sketching took place after returning. However, more European stops before returning home delayed this slightly.
