A week spent studying architecture closely, touring Palazzo buildings, and collecting research for a group project and our thesis projects to come.
In both smaller groups and with the entire Unit 11, we produced a group publication titled 'Ca': Studies on the Venetian Palazzo Typology'. Throughout the trip I toured Procuratie Vecchie, restoration by David Chipperfield Architects, Ca' Rezzonico and lots more Palazzos.
For both the group publication and additional modules with the WSA, these buildings in particular were studied in depth. The first a group technology study of the restoration of Procuratie Vecchie, and the second I also used base research for my thesis project renovating Palazzo Diedo.
A main aspect was visiting site possibilities for our final thesis projects in undergrad, myself and just one more person chose Palazzo Diedo in Cannaregio. Working with an existing building was a fantastic challenge - link for project!
A fun part of the trip was the boat trip down the grand canal, in order to then make an extended elevation of the entire grand canal in the December crit at Cardiff!
We didn't have time to visit the Giardini della Biennale, however upon returning from the trip we studied different pavilions. My group worked on the Nordic Pavilion by Sverre Fehn, using hand-drawn skills for elevations, sections and plans. Also included in the appendix of the publication linked below.
